The West Ouachita Senior Center is a United Way nonprofit agency, established in 1980 and committed to providing community support services for seniors in Ouachita Parish. The Center for the Elderly is responsible for carrying out a variety of activities related to promotion, planning, coordination, inter-agency liaison, information exchange, intermediation, monitoring and evaluation. These activities are designed to lead to the development or improvement of a comprehensive and coordinated system to care for older people (60 years of age or older) in all areas of the Ouachita Parish. The goal is to help seniors lead independent, meaningful, and dignified lives in their own homes and communities for as long as possible. Every year, more than 5,000 elderly individuals receive services from the Center for the Elderly that help them age in a healthy way.
These services include transportation to destinations in Ouachita Parish with wheelchair accessible buses and vans. Additionally, the Louisiana Commodity Supplemental Food Program (LA CSFP) is available to eligible seniors. This program is one of forty-three CSFP state programs across the country and is currently the third largest program in the nation.
